UPDATE: Tesla has had a record third quarter, selling 241,300 cars worldwide, up 73 percent from a year earlier.

The majority of the vehicles were Model 3 and Model Y with 232,025 delivered to customers around the world. In New Zealand, the Model 3 is the fourth biggest selling passenger vehicle with 1094 registered so far this year. But September’s figures have smashed that record with the Model 3 the top-selling car in New Zealand with 1066 registrations, beating the likes of Toyota’s Corolla.

“In the third quarter, we produced approximately 238,000 vehicles and delivered over 240,000 vehicles,” Tesla said in a statement.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience as we work through global supply chain and logistics challenges.”

The latest results were higher than than the company's previous record for 201,250 vehicles in the second quarter, marking the sixth consecutive quarter-on-quarter gains for the company.

Quarterly deliveries are one of the most closely watched indicators for Tesla. They are also widely seen as a barometer of consumer demand for electric vehicles amid a transition away from the internal combustion engine, according to Bloomberg.
