BMW is close to revealing the all-new 4 Series coupe after it has undergone extensive testing and heads back to the Munich-based engineers.

The two-door sports car was honed at the winter testing centre at Arjeplog, Sweden, at BMW Group’s facility in Miramas, France and on the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife circuit.

Now it is being driven around the motorways and country roads surrounding BMW Group’s research and innovation centre in Munich.

BMW says the 4 Series coupe has a bespoke chassis set-up to give it a more “captivating sports performance”.

Although it’s heavily based on the 3 Series sedan, the coupe is 57mm lower and its centre of gravity is 21mm closer to the road than its four-door counterpart.

BMW says that the 23mm wider rear track than the 3 Series sedan “sharpens the car’s handling characteristics by a significant degree”.

The M440i xDrive coupe has a turbocharged 3-litre in-line six-cylinder engine combined with a 48V electrical architecture that introduces mild hybrid properties, including off-throttle coasting.

We could see the 4 Series coupe in New Zealand later this year, depending on any production delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
