Will 2021 be the year of the Toyota Hilux?
Toyota New Zealand’s new boss is making a bold claim about the updated Hilux ute just before its launch next month.
A refreshed Hilux is set to be in dealerships next month with upgrades including a larger grille and bumper as well as redesigned headlights and tail lights.
Inside, the Hilux gets a new 8in infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, physical volume and tuning dials and a digital display nestled between the analogue dials.
There is also a performance boost for the 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine plus some suspension and steering tuning changes.
The new frontal treatment is applied to the “wide-body’’ SR, SR5 and SR5 Cruiser models while the entry level WorkMate remains visually unchanged.
Toyota NZ CEO Neeraj Lala just posted on Facebook: “Headline: Hilux reclaims #1 in 2021. Saw it here first - place your order before it’s too late.”
The Hilux was the top selling ute for 32 years, until Ford snatched the title in 2014.
“This new model is hands down our best Hilux that we have introduced, and I am confident more customers will return to a brand that previously dominated the New Zealand landscape for more than three decades,” said Lala, who was appointed CEO in July.
Toyota NZ will also have a hybrid Hilux for sale next year.
