Volvo SUVs have scored double honours in the 2020 Auto Trader UK New Car Awards, announced yesterday.

The mid-size XC60 dominated the Best Car for Families category to maintain its record of success in the awards each year for the past three years.

The XC90 swept the board in its class to lift the title of Best Seven Seater, impressing owners not just with its easily adjustable seating options, but also the use of space and the reasonable cost of maintenance.

The Auto Trader UK New Car Awards are determined by the votes of car owners themselves, and this year more than 181,000 took part.

Erin Baker, Auto Trader UK Editorial Director, said: "The Volvo XC60 scored full marks in 11 categories to win Auto Trader UK's Best Car for Families award. It also scored highly for ease of parking and for driving comfort. We love the style, safety and practicality it offers consumers, too."

Turning to the XC90, Erin added: "The XC90 came first in all categories to win the Best Seven Seater award. It's easy to see why: from the contemporary, premium interior to the generous space and impressive tech, it is the best seven-seat SUV out there right now."

The XC60 successfully combines cool modern styling with the practicality, safety and ease of use that families need. Convenience and comfort are designed into the spacious five-seat cabin, while the load space can be easily extended to an impressive 1410 litres, with accessory roof bars and cycle carriers available to carry even more kit for a family expedition. A panoramic glass sunroof (standard on plug-in hybrid versions) gives everyone a great view, while the availability of a hands-free power-operated tailgate makes accessing the load space simple.

The XC90 captures the same qualities on a larger and even more luxurious scale. Its generous proportions allow for a third row of seats to be included, which can comfortably accommodate not just children but occupants up to1.70m tall. The second- and third-row seats all fold individually to create a flexible load space up to a huge 1856 litres.

Both models provide seamless onboard connectivity via Volvo's Sensus touchscreen system and are equipped with comprehensive safety features, including active systems that provide automatic protection against many common accident risks. Both the XC60 and XC90 are available with Volvo's highly efficient Recharge Plug-in Hybrid petrol-electric powertrains.

Matt Galvin, Volvo Car UK Commercial Operations Director, said: "SUVs are the key to success in today's market, so it's not surprising that competition is fierce. We're proud that our line-up, including the XC60 and XC90, has performed so strongly, defining what is best about the Volvo brand today. The Auto Trader UK Awards focus on key qualities – the practicality and advanced safety that are essential for a family car, and the right combination of space, usability and comfort that makes for a superb family-friendly model."
