The seventh generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has just had its global reveal with not only an all-new body shape but is the technologically advanced vehicle in the brand’s lineup.

The luxury four-door sedan gets the second generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) while offering numerous innovations in the areas of driver assistance, protection and interaction.

Using cameras in the overhead control panel and learning algorithms, MBUX Interior Assist recognises and anticipates the wishes and intentions of the occupants. It does this by interpreting head direction, hand movements and body language, and responds with corresponding vehicle functions. For example, if the driver looks over his/her shoulder towards the rear window, Interior Assist automatically opens the sunblind.

The S-Class will allow level 3 autonomous driving at speeds up to 60km/h.

The new S-Class, codenamed W223, will be the first Mercedes model to offer level three autonomous driving capability at speeds of up to 60km/h. The new Drive Pilot system, which uses lidar among a range of different sensors, will be introduced during the second half of 2021. It allows the driver to go hands-off for extended periods in high traffic density and “suitable sections of motorway”, Mercedes says, although LED lights integrated into the steering wheel prompt the driver to take control when necessary.

The S-Class will be launched with six-cylinder in-line petrol and diesel engines in various output classes are the first engine variants for the new S-Class.

A V8 engine with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and 48-volt onboard electrical system will be available soon after. A plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of around 100 kilometres will follow in 2021.

The S-Class gets a news tablet-like infotainment screen.

"The S-Class is the world's best-selling luxury saloon. With the latest generation we want to offer our customers innovation, safety, comfort and quality as never before," says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG.

With a short front overhang, a long wheelbase and a balanced rear overhang, the S-Class is designed as a classical saloon with perfect proportions. The wide track and flush-mounted wheels with modern designs give the vehicle a muscular look,

Inside the S-Class, the designers have created a feel-good ambience with lounge character marked by elegance, high quality and lightness. The dashboard with its new architecture, modern surface design and ergonomic display arrangement is a particular highlight.

The rear is set to be a mobile office with controls and internet.

The most striking aspect of the interior is the new infotainment touchscreen that is now tablet-like and works to control many aspects of all of the car, including rear passenger needs.

The luxurious four-door sedan has been comprehensively re-engineered around a new body structure that’s 60kg lighter than the old S-Class.

More than 98 kg of components made from resource-conserving materials are used in the S-Class. The number of components containing recyclates is now 120 – more than twice as many as in the preceding model. Another 40 kg or so are made from renewable raw materials.

The S-Class is expected to be available in early 2021 for New Zealand customers, with prices and specifications closer to launch.
