The compact SUV market in New Zealand is as competitive as ever, and Honda entered the segment with its latest offering, the ZR-V.

Striking a balance between performance, design, and practicality, this vehicle aims to carve its niche in a crowded segment.

According to Honda, the name "ZR-V" stands for "Z Runabout Vehicle", a reference to Generation Z, and unrelated to Honda Z microcars. White Honda Japan may be aiming at the generation who were born between 1997 and 2012, while in New Zealand its buyers will be in their 30s.

The ZR-V Sport uses an eCVT that houses two electric motors.

There are two variants, one called the Turbo with a 1.5T engine and priced from $47,000 while the Sport is a hybrid priced from $55,000. It has a 2-litre engine producing 104kW of power and 182Nm of Torque.

The ZR-V Sport uses an eCVT that houses two electric motors and the hybrid output is then 135kW with 315Nm at 2000rpm.

We had the Sport model that prioritises fuel efficiency without sacrificing agility. The official fuel figures are 5.5litre/100km and we managed around those figures for our week-long test drive.

The ZR-V has a 9in audio screen.

One of the ZR-V's standout features is its sleek and modern design and praise has to go for the front grille that had a Maserati Grecale-eque look thanks to prominent vertical slats.

Honda has managed to infuse the compact SUV with a sense of sportiness, evident in its sculpted lines and bold front fascia. The aerodynamic profile enhances its aesthetic appeal and contributes to improved fuel economy and reduced wind noise.

Inside, the cabin exudes a premium feel, with high-quality materials and thoughtful ergonomics. Ample legroom and cargo space ensure comfort for passengers and practicality for everyday use. Overall, the ZR-V's design strikes a harmonious balance between style and functionality, setting it apart from its competitors.

The grille is similar to the Maserati Grecale.

In terms of practicality, the Honda ZR-V excels in various aspects. Its versatile interior configuration allows for easy customisation to accommodate passengers and cargo alike.

The ZR-V Sport also has an impressive list of standard specs, including 10.2in driver’s display and 9in audio screen. The power tailgate is helpful as is the ‘walk away’ door locking.

With generous storage compartments and cleverly designed cubby holes, organizing belongings is a hassle-free experience. Additionally, advanced safety features, such as lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking, provide peace of mind on the road. Whether it's a grocery run or a weekend getaway, the ZR-V proves to be a reliable companion for any journey.

Whether you're navigating city streets, hitting the motorways or embarking on a road trip, the ZR-V proves to be capable. There are three driving modes; normal, econ and sport.

We took the ZR-V on a number of different road conditions; city commutes, winding country roads and motorway overtaking plus everyday lifestyle situations such as supermarket parking.

It’s an easy car to live with in all the conditions. The engine gives you plenty of oomph when overtaking, the 18in tyres gives a stable ride and despite the ZR-V being on a similar platform to the Honda Civic sedan, it has a confident stance when driving.

The Honda ZR-V faces stiff competition in the crossover SUV segment, with rivals such as the hybrid Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson vying for market dominance.

The Honda ZR-V is a five-seater with a fold down cup holder.

Each contender brings its unique strengths to the table, but its hybrid equivalents can be pricy.

However, the ZR-V distinguishes itself with its winning combination of performance, design, and practicality, appealing to drivers seeking a well-rounded driving experience. It’s the best-looking SUVs out there.

The Honda ZR-V is a compelling option in the competitive compact SUV landscape. With its commendable performance, striking design, and practical features, it caters to the diverse needs of modern drivers.

While facing formidable competition, the ZR-V holds its own with its blend of versatility and refinement.
