Reviewed: All-new 2024 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works

Mini is often called a go-kart when it comes to its handling but the all-new 2024 Countryman John Cooper Works puts the ‘go’ into go-kart.

Mini NZ launched the third generation of the compact SUV in February this year, starting with the Countryman C and JCW ALL4, while the Countryman E, SE ALL4 and S ALL4 variants will be available later this year.

It’s been 13 years since the modern Countryman was launched by parent company BMW Group, and the new model of the five-door vehicle includes enhanced versatility, digitalisation and adventure capability.

The JCW Countryman ALL4 features an in-line 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol turbocharged engine.

Plus it has the new, stunning design philosophy of ‘Charismatic Simplicity’ that pays homage to the minimalist design of the classic Mini, according to the brand.

The new Countryman showcases a new octagonal front grille that houses an integrated sensor suite to support the increased functionality of the driver assistance systems.

The gently curved roof seamlessly transitions to the newly designed C-pillar which sets the stage as the differentiating feature between variants and equipment options. The reduction of some features results in a visually striking silhouette enhanced by its clean surfaces and clear-cut lines.

Inside, the Countryman has a now more simplistic and sophisticated look while retaining the iconic features such as toggles and a circular infotainment screen, but it takes more driver technology from BMW.

The dashboard layout is intuitive, featuring the latest iteration of Mini's infotainment system.

But why is the Mini referred to as a go-kart? It was originally compared to a kart as creator Sir Alec Issigonis positioned the wheels as far out towards the corner of the vehicle as possible and used rigid rubber cones instead of springs in the suspension.

That legacy continues to this day, making all variants of Minis fun to drive.

I was offered the Countryman C (priced from $54,990) or John Cooper Works (from $79,990) to review. I picked the later model, of course!

John Cooper Works (JCW) is an in-house tuning and development segment, that tunes up the vehicles to a sportier variant.

I’ve often written about my love of Mini; my second car was a 1974 Mini, and I bought my daughter, Grace, a Mini Countryman as her first car.

Picking up the Countryman JCW at the Auckland Mini Garage, assistant sales manager Dan told me during the handover that there were a variety of driving modes (Core, Green, Go-Kart, Balance, Timeless, Personal, Trail and Vivid) but he drove it in go-kart mode … and that was the best advice I’ve been told because it turned it into a pocket rocket.

The JCW Countryman ALL4 features an in-line 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol turbocharged engine, capable of producing 221 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque.

To elevate its go-kart-like driving experience is  ALL4 variable torque distribution system, adaptive suspension and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. 

This helps the Countryman JCW to achieve 0-100km/h in just 5.4s and comfortably reach a maximum speed of 250km/h. At the same time, the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system provides enhanced traction and stability in various driving conditions. 

Coupled with a sport-tuned suspension and adaptive dampers, the Countryman JCW balances nimble handling and comfort. The steering is precise and communicative, allowing drivers to easily tackle twisty roads.

The cockpit is driver-focused, with supportive JCW sports seats that provide excellent bolstering during spirited drives. The dashboard layout is intuitive, featuring the latest iteration of Mini's infotainment system seamlessly integrated into the central console.

While the Countryman remains practical with ample cargo space and rear passenger room, it's the JCW trim's attention to detail—like contrast stitching, carbon fibre accents, and bespoke JCW instrumentation—that elevates the driving experience to a higher level.

In the competitive landscape of compact performance SUVs, the 2024 Mini Countryman JCW faces formidable rivals such as the Volkswagen Tiguan R and Audi SQ3. While each competitor brings its unique blend of performance and luxury, the Countryman JCW sets itself apart with its distinctive Mini character, agile handling, and customisable driving dynamics. Its compact size also makes it more maneuverable in urban environments compared to larger alternatives in the segment.

What truly sets the JCW apart is its dynamic capabilities. Mini engineers have fine-tuned the suspension, steering, and braking systems to deliver a driving experience that's as engaging as it is exhilarating.

Whether tackling winding country roads or navigating Auckland city streets, the Countryman JCW exhibits minimal body roll and exceptional grip, thanks in part to its All4 all-wheel-drive system that optimally distributes power for maximum traction. 

The adaptive suspension further enhances ride comfort without sacrificing agility, allowing drivers to switch between sporty dynamics and everyday comfort at the touch of a button.

On the road, the 2024 Mini Countryman JCW impresses with its nimble handling and precise steering feedback. The electromechanical power steering system is direct, offering a communicative feel that instils confidence when cornering. 

The JCW-specific sport-tuned exhaust system provides an exhilarating soundtrack under hard acceleration, adding to the visceral experience of piloting this compact powerhouse. There is nothing quite like hitting the onramp of the motorway and letting the Countryman JCW do its thing, with the pushback in the seats, and the cracking of the exhaust making me laugh every time.

The 2024 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works embodies Mini's ethos of combining fun and functionality while pushing the boundaries of what a compact SUV can achieve. 

With its distinctive styling, potent performance, and engaging driving dynamics, the Countryman JCW appeals to enthusiasts seeking a spirited driving experience without compromising everyday usability.

While some may argue that its price premium over the standard Countryman is substantial, the JCW trim justifies its cost with a level of performance and exclusivity that few rivals can match.

I think the new Countryman JCW is not just an evolution but a revolution of the compact SUV Mini.

  2. Premium Price Tag: While competitively priced against its rivals, the JCW variant commands a premium over the standard Countryman.

  3. Fuel Efficiency: Despite efforts to balance performance and efficiency, the JCW model may not match the fuel economy of less powerful alternatives.
