Matt’s top five favourites for 2020

This is a lucky dip as I pick my favourite cars coming to New Zealand in 2020. I have tracked these cars since scoop pictures were first revealed in 2018, or some as early as 2017. Some of my top picks were launched in 2019 and are only now arriving into New Zealand.

1. Audi RSQ8

When the first global pictures came out on 20 November 2019, I was excited.  With the original Q8 pictures revealed in June 2018, I wondered what it would look like as an RSQ8, and now the wait is over. With 441kW of power and 800Nm of torque, the RSQ8 goes from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. This is as close to beating a Lamborghini Urus as one can get. Initial reviews of European journalists are excellent. The styling looks good. I recently drove the SQ8 and liked it - I can’t wait to drive the RSQ8!

2. Aston Martin DBX

As a previous DB11 owner, I am keen to try the DBX which lands in NZ next month. Since meeting President and Group CEO of Aston Martin, Dr Andy Palmer when he came to New Zealand for the DB11 launch, I have watched with interest his Aston Martin turnaround strategy.  I saw the first official pictures of the DBX in February 2019 after seeing it in many disguises. Aston Martin has opted for the 4-litre AMG-sourced V8 at 405kW/700Nm, which takes 4.5 seconds to 100km/h. I think the styling looks sharp.

3. Porsche Taycan Turbo S

I can’t wait to get my hands on this weapon.  Some cars I really dream about and this is one of them. With the Taycan now on sale in most world markets, New Zealand will be one of the last in April. Whilst the driving range is not that of a Tesla, the sophistication and handling seems in a class of its own, and like a real Porsche. I think it’s gutsy for Porsche to put so many eggs into getting this car to the market at the front end of the electric stampede. I think the high riding Gran Turismo version of the Taycan could be even more special.

4. Volkswagen Golf GTI

When the Mark 8 version of the VW GTI hatchback arrives it should be the most fun ever. At 180kW it will have plenty of poke. In the UK, it comes in a six-speed manual or seven-speed auto. The GTD version with allegedly one of the cleanest diesel engines ever made and with 147kW, also looks appealing. But it will be interesting to see what models VW NZ brings in. On the GTI, I like the quintet of lights in the grill and the full length LED light bar. Inside, the interior is futuristic.  The sad news is it might not arrive here until the first quarter of 2021, so order now.

5. Volvo XC40 Electric

The cute Volvo XC40, released in early 2018, is a strong seller in New Zealand. The shape looks good, especially the front profile, and I would probably tweak the back a little. The interior is high spec and ahead of its time. I expect the 300kW “ReCharge” version will be a hit. Prices and an on sale date are unclear, but I hope it’s before the end of the year.
