Calling all owners of electric vehicles, a Kiwi fan group wants to create a world record for the and it needs your help.

Electric Island Waiheke (EIW) held the inaugural EV Pride Day event in March 2020. Covid cancelled 2021 and 2022 EV Pride Day events but it will be held again on Sunday February 12, 2023.

All EV owners will be invited to bring their vehicles to the carpark at Placemakers Waiheke from 2.15pm.

On arrival drivers will be directed to a dedicated parking place, asked to register, and have drone photography taken of the assembled EVs. The event will then be registered with Guinness World Records.

After the photo, EV drivers will then be invited to drive in convoy from Ostend to Oneroa Village, then disperse.

Organiser Jim Pilling says he needs help from EV owners.

“The aim of the assembly is to set a record for the most EVs in one place and one time on a residential island,” he says.

So he’s asking for EV owners to visit the island on February 12, and there’s good news for plug-in hybrid owners … you are included too. Also invited are e-scooter, e-motorbike, and e-bike owners.

EV Pride Day is an opportunity to allow Waiheke EV owners and EV owner island visitors to feel proud about owning an electric vehicle.

Electric Island Waiheke (EIW) is a charitable trust formed in October 2018, as a result of a concerned group of islanders wanting to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles on the island.

According to the group, there are 667 EVs on Waiheke Island already.
