Ferrari has taken the ‘bespoke’ term to a whole new level with the announcement of its one-off sports car that was commissioned by a “discerning” (and very rich) European customer.

The new Ferrari Omologata, with its Rosso Magma finish and sophisticated racing livery, took two years to create from in the initial presentation of sketches, to being tested this week at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track at Maranello, with its “V12 engine note reverberating around the track”.

Ferrari says it was commissioned by “a discerning European client” offering the Italian brand’s line of unique coachbuilt one-off models. The client wanted a sports car that was equally at home on the track and (we presume) driving to the owner’s mansion.

The original sketches covered a variety of inspirations, from racing heritage to sci-fi and references to modern architecture.

“The idea from the onset was to create a futuristic design with distinctive elements reinterpreted in a fresh manner to provide potential for a timeless shape that is certain to leave a lasting impression,” says Ferrari.

he one-off Ferrari Omologata has a front-engined 6.5-litre V12.

To achieve this, the designers used the underlying package of the 812 Superfast, keeping only the windscreen and headlights as existing bodywork elements. This created a mid-front layout to deliver a sleek design defined by smooth volumes and undulating reflections, uplifted by sharp graphics with sparingly distilled surface breaks wherever dictated by aerodynamic functions.

“The trickiest aspect was striking the ideal balance between expressiveness and restraint: the Omologata had to ooze street presence whilst maintaining a very pure formal language,” says Ferrari.

Ferrari’s design team, headed up by Flavio Manzoni, handcrafted the Omologata entirely out of aluminium, featuring a flattened oval grille, which tapers up to a rounded section over the front wheel arches.

But what is powering the Omologata? It gets one of only 10 front-engined V12 one-off that Ferrari has delivered since the 2009 P540 Superfast Aperta. The 6.5-litre engine produces 588kW of power, and 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds. Let’s hope the “discerning owner” has a long driveway to his mansion so he can test this.

And as for the name, Omologata. It means “approved” in Italian.
