BMW New Zealand has announced the prices and equipment specifications for the new M5 super sedan that for the first time, will be available in both a pared-down ‘Pure’ variant, and a pumped-up Competition spec.

The former features a 4.4-litre V8 massaged with two turbos to produce 441kW and 750Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

The latter adds more 19kW power and specific chassis tweaks to give the car even more direct responses and improved performance. The car sits 7mm lower, with suspension components tuned to give the car approximately 10 per cent more stiffness.

Both variants of the M5 receive an M Sport exhaust system with flap-controlled tailpipes in New Zealand, and feature the now-familiar BMW M xDrive – an intelligent all-wheel drive system that provides drivers with a choice of three drive mode settings, depending on desired driving outcomes.

In 4WD modes, the system is rear-biased: power is only transmitted to the front axle when the rear reaches its limit of grip.

Drivers can also completely disengage the front axle in 2WD mode, and DSC can be switched off completely for the most authentic M5 driving experience.

With launch control engaged in 4WD mode, the M5 will complete the 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.4 seconds; the Competition spec improves this by a tenth of a second.

Both cars are electronically limited to 250km/h.

The M5 Pure is $189,900 and the Competition is from $234,300.

Updated exterior elements follow that of the new 5 Series, including a revised integrated kidney grille, as well as new front and rear light graphics; the M5 is further differentiated with M-specific design cues and exterior technology.

In New Zealand, both the M5 and M5 Competition feature BMW Laserlights. Kidney grilles feature M-specific double slats, and the bonnet is made from aluminium with M5-specific swage lines.

Other distinguishing features on both cars include wider front and rear arches, M-specific side mirrors and a CFRP roof.

The M5 Competition adds further exterior differentiation with Competition-specific badging on all four corners of the car, a completely blacked-out kidney grille, a small rear spoiler and a rear diffuser insert.

The cockpit of the new BMW M5 and M5 Competition features the latest BMW technology, including a digital BMW Live Cockpit Professional, a larger 12.3-inch control display with M-specific displays and new features like BMW’s Digital Key and Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Both cars also feature BMW’s latest iDrive 7.0 operating system, compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

New M Modes and Setup buttons on the centre transmission tunnel enable personalisation of driving modes, while an M-specific steering wheel features intuitive M mode buttons to quickly switch between previously-set modes.
