BMW Group New Zealand has enjoyed a stellar year, achieving a new sales record in 2023 thanks to the combined registrations of its two brands.

BMW and Mini registrations totalled 2812 for the year, which was also a 12 per cent uptick on the 2022 result.

Mini alone set a record for total registrations with 1,048 (up 23 per cent), while BMW, with 1,764, achieved a six per cent upsurge despite a market decline of five per cent.

Model highlights included 21 per cent growth for the acclaimed BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), while the BMW 7 Series flagship sedan recorded a notable 22 per cent increase in registrations.

Double-figure percentage growth was also enjoyed by the Mini Countryman, with the versatile Sports Activity Vehicle (SUV) recording 450 registrations – a 15 per cent increase on the previous year.

The year also saw registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) hit new highs. There were 539 new BMW BEVs registered – representing an impressive 47 per cent increase from the year before – while Mini saw 30 per cent growth with 358 of its BEVs finding new homes in 2023.

The BMW i4 was the highest-performing model in the marque’s line-up, with 133 registrations in 2023. This represented a 118 per cent increase on the 2022 mark and underlined the success of the fully electric Gran Coupé model in New Zealand.

The BMW iX also recorded 22 growth with 73 units registered, while registrations of the Mini Electric Hatch were up more than 30 per cent.

BMW will continue to expand its BEV offering in 2024, with eDrive20 variants of both the iX1 and iX2 bolstering the product portfolio through the first half of 2024. By midyear, BMW will offer 12 fully electric variants to customers. This year Mini will enhance its BEV offering with the introduction of the new Mini Cooper and Mini Countryman to the local market.

The BMW iX also recorded 22 growth with 73 units registered.

BMW Group New Zealand Managing Director Adam Shaver reflected on 2023 with pride, saying the group brands had performed in exemplary fashion.

“We are delighted to have gone from strength to strength in 2023 even in challenging market conditions to deliver, in harmony with our valued dealer partners, a record number of vehicles across the country,” said Shaver.

“Highlights have been across the board, notably for our range of battery electric vehicles with outstanding year-on-year growth.

“We now look ahead to continuing the momentum in 2024, with the arrival of new BEVs in key growth segments and supporting this model rollout with the continued expansion of our destination charging program.”
